Die Sonate des südafrikanischen Komponisten Michael Blake spiegelt eine Auseinandersetzung von Blake mit der großen westlichen Musikkultur und der der Musik seiner südafrikanischen Heimat wieder. Die Verwendung von Motiven und Charakteristiken der berühmten Sonate von Beethoven wird vereint mit Wesensmerkmalen der indigenen Musik Südafrikas. Das geschieht insbesondere durch die Verwendung afrikanischer Rhytmen als von von indigenen Gesängen aus der Entstehungszeit der Sonate von Beethoven (um 1807/8). Das Werk wurde geschrieben für Friedrich Gauwerky und Daan Vandewalle im Zusammenhang mit deren CD-Produktion von Werken Blakes für das Wergo label.

The Sonata by south-african composer Michael Blake reflects a confrontation between western music culture and the music of Blake's home - country South - Africa. The use of motivs and characteristics of the famous Sonata by Beethoven goes along with typical essentials of the indigenous music of South Africa. This happens particularly through the use of african rhythms and indigenous songs from the time in which Beethovens Sonata was composed (1807/8).The work was composed for Friedrich Gauwerky and Daan Vandewalle on the occasion of their CD-production with works by Michael Blake for the Wergo-label.
